GLAUCOMA

This is the atrophy or death of the cells of the optic nerve and retina as a result of an increase in intraocular pressure. It can only be prevented by means of early diagnosis with regular ophthalmological check-ups. MACULAR DISEASE OF THE RETINA

These are the group of diseases that affect the macula. The macula is the area of the retina charged with focussing the retinal image and containing the majority of the chromatic photoreceptors of the retina. It is where the human eye achieves maximum image resolution.

It consists of a degenerative disease which affects the central area of the retina: the macula, responsible for central vision. There are two types of AMD: Wet and Dry. The majority of people present the “dry” form of macular degeneration. This is caused by age and the thinning of the macular tissues. Sight loss is generally gradual.

AMD does not cause any type of pain, and may therefore go unnoticed in its initial phases. On occasion, when just one eye is affected, the symptoms may not be noticed until the second eye becomes affected. The symptoms can vary depending on the person affected, but generally there is a distortion of straight lines, which appear to become curved or twisted.
The central part of the vision may also appear blurry, with a dark shadow in the centre.

Wet AMD appears when there is a proliferation of anomalous blood vessels in the macula, damaging it and causing severe and irreversible loss of central vision. (+information)
